Richmond, Virginia -- The Vinifera Wine Growers Association is honored to announce the recipients of this year's Best-of-Show, Tiffany Sterling Silver Jefferson Loving Cup for the top scoring wine of the 2002 Virginia Wine Competition, and other coveted trophies awarded to both individuals and organizations that have made major contributions toward consumer wine and food education and appreciation, advancements in viticulture and enology, and the growth and development of the American wine industry.

The presentation of trophies and winning wine medals will be made at the 27th Annual Virginia Wine Festival, Great Meadow, The Plains, Virginia, at 12:00 noon, Saturday, August 17th, in the festival seminar tent.

Best-of-Show Jefferson Loving Cup

The Best-of-Show Tiffany sterling silver Jefferson Loving Cup, for the top winning wine of this year's annual Virginia Wine Competition which was held on July 21st, 2002, at Lansdowne Resort, goes to Barboursville Vineyards, Barboursville, Virginia, for its 2001 Sauvignon Blanc. Also, the 21 gold, 43 silver and 59 bronze medals of the competition will be presented at the awards ceremony.

The Monteith Trophy

The most prestigious of trophies, the sterling silver Tiffany Monteith bowl has been awarded to Donniella (Donnie) Winchell, Executive Director, Ohio Wine Producers Association, for a career of providing leadership and promoting wine industry interests within Ohio, the East Coast and nationally. Donnie joins a list of distinguished recipients, 22 individuals and organizations that have excelled in contributing to the growth of the American wine industry since 1980, when the Monteith was first awarded.

Helping to present the award will be the representative of the American Wine Society, which was last year's Monteith recipient.

The perpetual Monteith Trophy, which is some 18" long and weighs 123 ounces, is one of the earliest forms of elegant silversmithing and is reported to have been used in the service of wine for over 300 years of European and Colonial American history. The escalloped rim was a practical device to allow the diner to hang his or her wine glass by the base while the cup end cooled in water between dinner courses with their accompanying wines. A ceramic example of the Monteith was used by Thomas Jefferson and is on display in the dining room at Monticello. Smaller individual glass versions were used by George Washington at Mount Vernon and are also on display in the Mansion's dining room. Another was commissioned by Colonial Williamsburg in 1955 to commemorate the Governor's Palace, made by the Wedgwood Company, England.

The Winegrape Productivity Tray

The silver Winegrape Productivity Tray goes this year to the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York, for years of sustained and outstanding practical help and technical assistance, both in viticulture and enology, to the wine industry of the East Coast of America.

The Winegrape Productivity Tray is an elegant silver champagne service tray, over two feet in length and bordered with a bas-relief grape and vine pattern and engraved with the VWGA grapevine logo at the center.

Distinguished Certificate Award

A special VWGA Distinguished Certificate Award will be presented to the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, for the planning and conduct of the 2002 "Rise of American Wine" forum which presented discussions on both national and international issues and challenges confronting the American wine industry, in which Robert Mondavi discussed his formula for success.
