McLEAN, VA Virginias Cabernet Franc wines outscored
the Cabernet Francs of France, California and New York in a recent
blind tasting conducted by the Virginia Wine Guide, an on-line review
of Virginia wines.
The top rated wine of the tasting was the Tarara (Leesburg, Va.)
1999 Cabernet Franc, with a score of 92+ on the Wine Guides
100-point rating system. Two additional Virginia wines from Barboursville
Vineyards scored in the 90s compared with one each from France,
New York and California. Other top-scoring Virginia wines were from
Chateau Morrisette, Villa Appalaccia and Veritas Vineyards.
We are very encouraged by the outcome of our recent Cabernet
Franc Taste-off, said Mike Potashnik, publisher of the Virginia
Wine Guide. The results clearly show that Virginias
wineries are producing exceptionally good wines and that Cabernet
Francs, in particular, have a bright future.
Seven Virginia wines, three French wines, four New York wines and
three California wines were tasted by the Virginia Wine Guides
tasting panel at the Colvin Run Tavern in McLean, Va. Further results
of the blind tasting can be found in the Virginia Wine and Food
Society October newsletter. Registration for the newsletter is free
at www.virginiawineguide.com.
The Virginia Wine Guide is an on-line review of Virginia wines
published by the Virginia Wine and Food Society, Inc., a not-for-profit
organization whose mission is to broaden awareness of and foster
appreciation for Virginia wines and the foods grown and prepared
in Virginia that best accompany them. The Society is a collaborative
endeavor of Virginias wineries, hotels, restaurants, retail
shops and most of all, individuals who share a deep appreciation
of the Commonwealths wine and food.
